Spring into Summer: Style-Up
There are so many new and exciting things that begin to happen once Spring hits. Sometimes they’re scary, sometimes they’re exciting, and often times they’re both! Working directly with a designer takes what seems like a daunting task, and makes it fun!
My hope is that this mini style-up article (really a mood board filled with the work of some incredible designers) will get you thinking of the possibilities that your space could offer to you. If you are interested in incorporating any of the elements in this article, contact me here. I would love to help you refresh your space and take it to the next level!
Here are my tips and tricks for a Spring into Summer Style-Up
1. Clean and Clear
It’s time to dump the junk. It’s hard to be springy when you’re weighed down. I am by no means a professional organizer, but if you’re in need of major help, there are a number of amazing local people that specialize in clearing the clutter.
2. Move it!
Rearranging furniture and accessories (plants, candles, vases, art, personal collections, etc.) creates new neural pathways in your mind. I’m not a psychologist, but as a design scientist I know how beneficial that can be for my mental health. There is something so refreshing about a simple floor plan change up — even with existing furniture! Sometimes it’s not about replacing — it’s about repositioning; not about erasing — about elevating. As a holistic designer, I take into account the things that matter most to you.
3. Shine baby, shine!
Small spaces? Big mirrors! Big Spaces? Big mirrors! This means more sunlight and more visual depth. That’s a win-win!
4. Swap it!
Spring cleaning can also mean Spring replacing! Swap out the pieces that don’t bring you JOY and replace them with pieces that do. Think: swap kitchen towels for cute Summer/Spring ones.
5. Shut the front door?!
Hey, if you want to re-paint your front door for every season…go ahead! I’m not stopping you. Let your outside reflect your inside, and paint that door something fresh! If you are feeling it, do not be afraid to go bold. Indoor and out — adding a fresh coat of paint is the cheapest way to transform a space.
6. Rising Heat? Swap the Sheet.
Cotton is a must. Trade in your heavy down duvet for a lighter fill. Swap your velvet for cotton/ linen. Breathable sheets make the heat sweet.
7. From darkness into light!
The sun is shining a little bit brighter…and isn’t it beautiful? Replace your winter blankets and warm pillows. Throws can still be cozy, but are replaced with something brighter and lighter as we transition into the warmer months. For an EASY change that you can use year after year, think light and airy slipcovers.
8. Treat yourself…and your windows!
Changing your draperies can really transform your space. Texture and color play an important role in lightening up a room. Again — think cotton and linen fabric in lights, shades of whites, and pastel colors. In my opinion, a custom window treatment really elevates a room. We can utilize trims, banding, and gorgeous rods — acrylic and brass are super in right now!
9. A real “living room”
Plants filter the air and produce oxygen, removing airborne toxins and adding life to your space! If you don’t have a green thumb, consider utilizing local plant companies, who can come to your home to take care of your beautiful plants and flowers. We are working from home now more than ever! Studies suggest that plants alleviate anxiety and depression and encourage creativity, productivity and happiness. Plants add height and balance to a room, which make it feel lush!
10. Getting Outdoors
Plants in your indoor space provide many benefits. If you can get outside, that’s even better! Stepping out to your patio for a BBQ or family gathering feels good right? Well…your patio can feel just as good as your living room. It just takes a little bit of panache!
